CARBOHYDRATES- HEROES OR VILLAINS?

Carbs don’t make you fat, being in a calorie surplus does!

All of us believed or know someone who believes that potatoes (made of carbs, mostly) make you fat and have cut them out of their diet completely. Lucky for you, we’re debunking this myth today.

Let’s start with the basics. Carbohydrates are present in a variety of food- some healthy, some unhealthy. Bread, rice, potatoes, fruits and lots more. The most common forms of carbohydrates are sugars, fibres and starches. Some of these high carb foods are an important part of a healthy diet. Carbohydrates give our body the energy it needs to perform its daily activities and functions.

Did you know that studies have proven that a lower or a higher carb diet lead to the exact same weight loss? More than the quantity, it is the quality of carbohydrates consumed that matters. It is wise to stay away from refined carbs and consume healthier sources of carbohydrates.

Here’s why carbs are good for you:

Diet is not just for a healthy heart and slim waistline. We also need to fuel our brains properly and carbs are our brain’s main source of energy. So, limiting carbs means depriving the brain of the fuel source.

High quality carbs contain heart and gut healthy fibre. Fibre helps in regulating hunger and blood sugar. This is why fibre is a quintessential part of a healthy diet.

Carbs provide sustained energy for a longer duration, keeping energised throughout the day. Carbs also help in a good, high-intensity workout. In fact, consuming fast acting carbohydrates while muscle training can help you exercise for longer to achieve better results.

Carbs help lower cortisol (stress hormone) and help with production of melatonin (sleep hormone) so carbs make you sleep better which in turn helps boost immunity, regulate metabolism, preserve muscle and lean body mass, recover faster and lose fat better among other alternatives.

See how potatoes, we once thought were evil, are actually the protagonist here.

Hence, cutting out all snacks to follow a stringent diet is not feasible in the long haul. You will eventually break down and have a relapse. It is better to have a little snack here and there, as it will not make you feel like you’re missing out on your favourite snack and can help you keep on track.

All we are saying is that it wouldn’t hurt indulging in a bag of BRB popped chips once in a while 😉

Time to say BRB to people who say that potatoes make you fat. Grab a bag of BRB now!
